I caught this film on the coach on the way to sunway lagoon last week and it was a pretty entertaining flick for a long bus ride. It was an unexpectedly good film, packed with witty humor, great acting, great action scenes and beautiful scenery and people. Here's a short synopsis:
The Brothers Bloom is a 2009 American postmodern caper flick written and directed by Rian Johnson. The Brothers Bloom start their adventure in confidence games as young children; Stephen dreaming up elaborate scenarios and his younger brother Bloom creates trust with his marks in order to achieve a con. The brothers' successful cons and the fiercely protective nature of Stephen has the children rejected from foster homes throughout their childhood.25 years later as adults, the brothers travel the world to continue their career as professional con men, never enlisting the same people in their cons except for their sidekick, a mysterious and silent Japanese woman called Bang Bang with a penchant to blow things up. As Bloom hits his mid-thirties, he wants to quit the business as he is losing his own identity to that of the characters he potrays; he doesn't know anymore what is real and what is make-believe. Stephen talks him through their final con, the mark to be the eccentric, lonely but beautiful New Jersey heiress, Penelope Stamp. As the brothers go through their final con, three main problems occur to thwart the plan. Their former mentor turned arch enemy is plotting to exact his revenge on the brothers, Penelope ends up being more unpredictable than their former marks and Bloom unexpectedly falls for her.
The plot twists and turns throughout the film and it was really fun watching the cons being pulled off. Towards the end, the line between reality and make-believe blurred and the audience is led to wonder who's really conning who, which is where the intrigue is. The actors put on a wonderful show and all the characters are so engaging. I love Penelope for her total bizarreness and adventurous spirit and her childish naivety makes her character so endearingly earnest and trusting. I love Bang Bang for her comical mimes(since she doesn't speak) and her outrageous outfits. I love Bloom for his brooding and romantic character; his constant inner struggle to find an identity kinda reflects what everyone's going through in life. I love Stephen for his intelligence in coming up with elaborate plots; he may be a manipulative scumbug in certain ways, but he sure has his charm, plus, it's no doubt he truly really loves his brother. All in all, a great show.
